Gymnix 2016: 4 medals in event finals for Team Belgium!

On Sunday, the event finals took place at the International Gymnix. Belgium was well represented and had strong chances of winning medals. And the girls delivered, with two titles and two silver medals !

6 Belgian gymnasts competed in final: Axelle Klinckaert (GymMax), Senna Deriks (Gymgroep AS), Gaelle Mys (OTV Nazareth), Julie Meyers (TK Sta Paraat - P. H. H. Hasselt vzw), Laura Waem (Sportiva Sint-Gillis-Waas) and Nina Derwael (TK Sta Paraat - P. H. H. Hasselt vzw).

During the team and all-around competitions, Nina Derwael fell on bars. But in final, it was a different story! Nina presented a Stalder full, a Bhardwaj (pak salto with full turn), a Ricna (stalder to straddle Tkatchev) and full-in dismount. For this routine, Nina got the beautiful score of 14.375 and first place!


Senna Deriks took silver with a beautiful series including a Tkachev, bars transitions and a full-in dismount. She got 14.175. Laura Waem finished just out of the podium. She even has been virtually in 3rd place before Senna Deriks' score changed. Laura ranked 4th with a routine including a Weiler with half turn, a full turn to Tkachev and a full-in dismount (14.000).

Gaelle Mys and Nina Derwael represented Belgium on balance beam. Gaelle finished in 5th place with 13.675 : Switch ring, Onodi, back handspring back handspring layout step out, double pike dismount.


Nina Derwael shone once again and won another medal, silver this time, with a score of 13.975! She performed a switch leap to ring leap, a front aerial to sheep jump, a side somi, back handspring back handspring layout step out, free walkover and a Steingruber dismount.

The competition ends with the floor exercise final, where Julie Meyers and Axelle Klinckaert will compete. Julie had some troubles on her landings, as she stepped out of bounds twice. She got 12.325 and finished in 7th place.

Axelle, known for her original routine, is the last gymnast to go on floor. She performed a double layout, a tucked full-in, a double tuck and a double pike to finish. She scored 14.250 and won the gold!

After the team gold and silver in the all-around for Axelle Klinckaert, Belgium adds four more medals to its collection: two titles for Nina on bars and Axelle on floor, and two silver medals for Senna on bars and Nina on beam! And let's not forget the great performances of Laura, Gaelle and Julie in finals.

The girls continue in a very beautiful way their preparation for the Olympic Test Event, where Belgium will send 6 gymnasts. The next step will be the friendly meet against Romania and Germany on April 3rd.
