Worlds 2021: Van den Keybus 16th and Kuavita 20th in all-around final

On October 22nd, Luka Van den Keybus and Noah Kuavita both competed in the all-around final at the World Championships. It was the first tim two male belgian gymnasts qualified for this final! Luka got the best result ever for a male belgian gymnast by placing 16th. Noah was 20th. Luka improved his qualification score by almost two tenths, scoring 81,265 points for a 16th place finish, the best result ever obtained by a male belgian gymnast at this level. He got his best result on vault, with a 14,533. Noah ended in 20th place after a stellar high bar routine and a stuck triple somersault dismount (14,266). The title was won by China's sensation Zhang Boheng (87,981), ahead Olympic Champion Daiki Hashimoto (87,964) and Ukraine's Illia Kovtun (84,899). Results: 1. Zhang Boheng (CHN) 87,981 2. Worlds 2021: 2 finals for the Belgian men

Tuesday october 19, the Belgian men competed during the qualifications at the World Championships in Kitakyushu. Luka Van den Keybus and Noah Kuavita both qualified for the all-around final. The Belgian men started their competition on still rings. Luka Van den Keybus scored 12.433 and Noah Kuavita 11.966. They both showed strong vaults. Luka scored 14.333 for his yourchenko with 2.5 twist and Noah 14.200 for his handspring double front. Luka was solid on parallel bars too and got 14.000 for his routine. Noah had some trouble and scored 11.300. On high bar Maxime Gentges  took the floor and scored 13.900 for a well controlled routine. Noah did even better and scored 14.066. He finishes on the 11th place on high bar. Luka added a 13.666 to his total. No problems on floor where Luka scored 13.966 and Noah 13.600. The Japanese city of Kitakyushu hosts the World Championships Artistic gymnastics from october 18 to 24. Team Belgium is represented by Maxime Gentges, Noah Kuavita and Luka Van den Keybus. As these World Championships are individual, there is no team competition.  Maxime Gentges   will compete on pommel horse and high bar.  Noah Kuavita  and  Luka Van den Keybus  will compete all-around and try to qualify for the all-around final.  On monday and tuesday morning the women's qualifications are scheduled. The men's qualifications start tuesday afternoon. The Belgian men will compete in the 2nd  subdivision, starting at 12H10 Belgian time. NINA DERWAEL IS OLYMPIC CHAMPION

On August 1st, Nina Derwael was in the uneven bars final. Cited among the favourites alongside new Olympic all-around champion Sunisa Lee, Nina came on top in this final and became the first belgian gymnast to win an Olympic title ! Nina was the first qualifier coming into this final. As the two time World and European Champion, she was dubbed one of the favourites, alongside Sunisa Lee, who matched Derwael's score in the team final. But not everything came according to plan for Lee who broke connections and hit the ground with her feet on her pak salto. With 14,500, she still managed to win the bronze medal. After that, no one was really a match to Derwael, who once again delivered under pressure to score 15,200 to win the gold medal and become an Olympic champion! Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games : Nina Derwael 6th and Jutta Verkest 23rd in the AA final

On July 29th, Nina Derwael and Jutta Verkest competed in the all-around final at the Olympic Games ! It's the first time two Belgian gymnasts are in the finals. Nina broke another record, placing 6th, while Jutta was 23rd in her first major final. In the absence of Simone Biles , who had to withdraw because of health struggles, a new Olympic Champion was crowned. Nina was in the first group and started on vault, while Jutta started on floor. Nina got her best score on bars, with 15,266 points, proving once again she's one of the best gymnasts on this event. She was strong on all events, getting a total points of 55,965 and a 6th place finish! Jutta was the youngest competitor there and did a stellar job in qualifications and team final. Probably a bit tired, she had some mistakes on bars but scored well overall, with 51,232 points to place 23rd. The battle for gold was open in the absence of Biles. Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games: 8th place for Belgium in the team final

This Tuesday was the women's team final at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, where, for the first time, Belgium competed. Nina Derwael started this final on beam for Team Belgium with an amazing routine (13.866). Things got a little bit more complicated for  Jutta . She started her beam routine with a good layout step out and and an excellent flip to two layout step out, but she then lost her confidence and counted a few wobbles. She also had to take a deep step back on her dismount. She scored 12.200   Maellyse fell twice and got 10.933. The ladies came back strongly on floor exercise. Jutta was first up, with her playfull choreography and nicely executed  tumbling passes (13.066). Nina was very expressive and solid and added 13.366 to the team total. Lisa 's double arabian, full-in and double tuck were skyhigh. She scored 12.900. On vault Jutta scored 13.466 for her Yurchenko with full twist. Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games : 4 historical finals for Team Belgium!

Sunday the Ariake Gymnastics Centre staged the women's qualifications at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Team Belgium did an excellent job and finished 5th. The team walks away with 4 historical finals: the team final, the all-around final for Nina and Jutta and off course the uneven bars final for Nina, a historical result ! Maellyse Brassart started the competition for Team Belgium on floor with a routine that included a full in, a double piked and a double tucked. She scored 12.766 . Jutta Verkest was next up and did slightly better with a 12.933. Nina Derwael  received the highest score of the team with a 13.566. Lisa Vaelen then got 12.766. She started with a sky high double arabian and a solid full in and double tucked.  On vault Jutta scored 13.400 for a solid Yurchenko with full twist. Nina added a half twist and scored 13.900. Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games: Team Belgym is ready to shine

Nina Derwael , Maellyse Brassart, Lisa Vaelen and Jutta Verkest  are ready to shine in the Ariake gymnastics centre!                                                       Credit: Maellyse Brs facebook The main goal for the team is a top 8 finish and a qualification for the Team Final. All 4 gymnasts will have to perform at the top of their abilities to obtain that goal but it's not impossible. They will compete in the last subdivision alongside the team of Germany and 2 mixed groups. In Rio 2016 they competed in the first subdivision. Team Belgium will start the competition on floor at 13:20 Belgian time and will be live on Sporza and Tipik (RTBF).  The girls will also try to qualify for the All-around final that gathers the 24 best gymnasts with a maximum of 2 per country. All 4 Belgian gymnasts can qualify for the final. All will depend on their performance during the qualifications. Off course all eyes will be on Nina Derwael  on uneven bars. 2021 Euros : Jutta Verkest 10th, Luka Van den Keybus 15th in the all-around final

The European Championships all-around finals took place this Friday. Last minute entry Jutta Verkest impressed and finished 10th. Luka Van den Keybus is 15th. It was withdrawal after another before the Women's all-around final. France's Marine Boyer was replaced by her teammate Sheyen Petit, Italy's Vanessa Ferrari by Naomi Visser and Romania's Larisa Iordache by Hungary's Csenge Maria Bacskay.  But it is following the withdrawal of Switzerland's Giulia Steingruber, 30 minutes before the start of the final, that Jutta Verkest  was suddenly set to compete. And she did so magnificently, taking the 10th place with a total score of 52.132, thanks to an astounding beam routine. Forgot the falls in qualifications, Jutta  got 13.500, 3 points better than on Wednesday.  Favourite after the qualifying round, Angelina Melnikova  (Russia) fell twice but still managed to clinch the silver medal (55.432). 2021 Euros: All-around final for Luka Van den Keybus

This Thursday, it was the men's turn to compete in the qualification round. Luka Van den Keybus qualified for the all-around final.  Maxime Gentges , Florian Landuyt , Noah Kuavita , Takumi Onoshima and Luka Van den Keybus defended the Belgian colours.  Maxime  and  Florian  competed in the second subdivision. Maxime  did all 6 events, while  Florian  competed on everything but high bar and still rings. They started their competition on pommel horse. Maxime fell and scored 12.766 while Florian scored 12.100. Maxime performed well on still rings and dismounted with a double front. The judges rewarded him with a 12.800. On vault Maxime  fell on his f ront handspring with one and a half twist (12.233).  Florian performed his Kasamatsu with one and a half twist well and scored  13.966. Maxime was solid on parallel bars and dismounted with a double pike (13.100).  Florian   made a little mistake but scored 13.766. 2021 Euros: Women's qualifications

Wednesday 21st of April, the women completed their qualifications at the European Championships in Basel. Margaux Daveloose, Fien Enghels, Noémie Louon and Jutta Verkest defended the Belgian colours. Margaux Daveloose and Jutta Verkest  were the first two gymnasts competing on balance beam at this European Championships. This is never an easy task. Margaux managed to stay on the beam but had some wobbles and connection issues. She scored 11.700. Jutta  fell twice but showed a beautiful backhandspring to two layout step out combination for 10.466.  Noémie and Fien also started their competition on balance beam in the 3rd subdivision. Noémie fell twice at the very beginning of her routine but came back strongly and still scored 11.333. Fien missed a few connections and fell on her acro series. She got 11.733. 2021 Europeans: All you need to know

On wednesday the 2021 Artistic Gymnastics European Championships start in Basel, Switzerland. 268 gymnasts of 38 countries will fight for the medals behind closed doors. 9 of them are Belgians.  Margaux Daveloose, Fien Enghels , Noémie Louon and Jutta Verkest will defend the Belgian colours on the women's side. Their qualifications will be held on Wednesday. They will try to qualify for the individual finals on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 24 athletes, with a maximum of 2 per country will advance to the all-around final on Friday. The apparatus finals will line up the 8 best gymnasts, with a maximum of 2 per country. Margaux and Jutta will compete in the first of 4 subdivisions. Noémie and Fien will take the stage in the third of 4 subdivisions. On the men's side  Maxime Gentges ,  Noah Kuavita ,  Florian Landuyt ,  Takumi Onoshima  and  Luka Van den Keybus  will represent Team Belgium. Their qualifications will be held on Thursday. After an internal test on march 5th, the preselection for the Belgian team was limited to 10 gymnasts on their road to Tokyo . The following 10 gymnasts are still in the running for one of the 4 spots on the Olympic team: Nina Derwael (Sta Paraat Hasselt) Axelle Klinckaert (Gymmax Dendermonde) Maellyse Brassart (Gym Passion Herseaux) Fien Enghels (Turnkring Geeraardsbergen) Margaux Daveloose (Turnkring Varsenaere) Noémie Louon (Turnkring Varsenaere) Lisa Vaelen ( De Gympies Keerbergen) Jutta Verkest (Gymflex Mechelen) Keziah Langendock (Gym Passion Herseaux) Charlotte Beydts (Sta Paraat Hasselt) The olympic road stops there for Margaux Dandois , Jade Vansteenkiste and Julie Vandamme . They'll continue to train alongside their teammates but will have a separate schedule for the remaining of the season. Jade will have to undergo surgery in April.
