2017 Trofeo Città Di Jesolo: final test for Senna and Nina before Euros!

Last weekend, Senna Deriks and Nina Derwael were in Italy for the 2017 Trofeo Città di Jesolo, a prestigious international competition, where Senna qualified for two event finals!

It was the first time in 10 years that Belgium competed in this tournament, that saw Olympic champions win medals in the past : Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas once competed in Jesolo !

The all-around and team finals took place on Saturday. Senna Deriks and Nina Derwael competed with two Italian gymnasts, Caterina Cereghetti and Sara Berardinelli. Together, they placed 7th, with a total score of 156.500.

The team started on beam, where Nina got a good score of 13.450, while Senna fell on her split 1/2 turn (12.250). On floor, Senna competed a brand new pass, a piked full-in. She gets 13.350, enough to place 5th and qualify for the event final. Slightly injured, Nina Derwael competed a downgraded routine on floor but got a good execution score overall (12.350, with a 4.2 difficulty start value). On vault, they both presented clean Yurchenko full twist.

The Belgians then headed to the uneven bars, their best event. Senna was the first in action, and she competed a strong routine to score 13.950, once again enough to qualify for the event final. Nina competed her new routine. With a difficulty score of 6.0, she was in contention for a spot in final, but unfortunately fell on her dismount. Her score of 13.750 was unfortunately not enough to qualify for the event final.

In the all-around, Senna ranked 11th (53.350) and Nina placed 12th 53.200). Riley McCusker from the United States wins gold, ahead of Brazil's Rebecca Andrade and another American, Abby Paulson.

On Sunday, Senna Deriks competed in the event finals on floor and bars. She placed 4th on bars and 5th on floor, great results for the young Belgian, just a couple of weeks before the European Championships.
